The DMV

How long have you waited at the DMV? Our event was 3 1/2 hours!! As Jerry and I waited we thought "how would Christina (our daughter in law) write this?" So as we waited we began .........

It was a cold day. In fact, too cold for school to be opened here in Greenville. As we entered the room for all things related to 'cars' we saw about 35 people seated and waiting for their number to be next. We stopped at the first desk, Jerry pulled out his notebook of important documents and we were also given a number and told that our number would be next ...... right.

So we stood, thinking our number would jump ahead of all those waiting. We know sooner took our place on the wall when a name was announced on the loud speaker. Jerry told the woman, "He just stepped out with a phone call" My next question, 'how did my husband know that name and that the man just went outside?' Turns out, the guy was a college student from NBBC and Jerry recognized the name and the face. We talked for awhile.

As we continue to wait, I saw two construction workers. They must have taken off work in order to get their license. How did I know they were construction workers? When their number was called they left behind small pieces of cement under their chairs. Just a typical day at the DMV.

Across from me was a fidgety woman. Her foot was moving side to side after she crossed her legs. I just knew she was a P.E. teacher from a local high school. She had on her cute sweat suit and New Balance shoes. But the biggest give away was the whistle still hanging around her neck. I wondered if she was missing a class or did she take off work to wait in line as well.

Then there was the couple that thought everyone should stand aside so they could go the the head of the line. What? Were they celeb's or political people? I don't think so! Just wealthy. They dressed the part and acted the part. At one line, they stood right in front of us and as we moved closer to the window, another lady opened the side door, waved and told them to come in. They left us lowly peons in line and got the special treatment they so deserved. Then at the other room they again were treated better than the average.
What was all this about? Now comes the rub......................

Our number was called. I went first, passed the eye test, gave all the correct info. and then it was Jerry's turn, and as he was just beginning: .....................................................
the entire state of South Carolina's DMV system went down!! I felt badly for him, but found a chair and got out a piece of gum. The eyes of all the workers went down the row of 15 workers to check if anyone's computer was working. Then the announcement came "The entire state's DMV system is down, please be patient"

It was getting close to the 3 hour and 15 minute time of our "fun" afternoon, when the computers did come back ..... one at a time. Jerry was up and back at the counter and finally got done. We then went directly to get the photo taken that would be on our license forever! (these never turn out nice for me, I even work cute earings but you can't see them on the license!)

After our 3 1/2 hour event and on our way home Jerry said, "well, I wanted to spend the afternoon together, but I didn't think it would all afternoon at the DMV. Want to eat out?"
"Of course I do!!!!" It would be a good ending to this frustrating afternoon.
